    5G – a building biology perspective

Published in the German Building Biology magazinebaubiologie magazin English language version of “5G aus baubiologischer Sicht“: Everybody is talking about 5G. The electrosmog debate has been stirred up again and all those concerns about the exposure to electromagnetic fields as well. The industry in particular, but also many other people would like to have faster and more powerful data networks. Yet others are concerned about radiation risks and data security. So what can building biology contribute to the solution, what do we know so far, and what do we have to expect from the future development of our ambient wireless environment? Hacking vulnerabilities with the Internet of Things (IoT)

Excerpt: Red faces in Red Square, again. Last July, I reported on the hacking of SyTech, an FSB (Federal Security Service) contractor working on internet surveillance tech. Now, reports have emerged from Russia of another shocking security breach within the FSB ecosystem. This one has exposed “a new weapon ordered by the security service,” one that can execute cyber attacks on the Internet of Things (IoT)–the millions of connected devices now in our homes and offices. The goal of the so-called “Fronton Program” is to exploit IoT security vulnerabilities en masse–remember, these technologies are fundamentally less secure than other connected devices in homes and offices. In fact, one of the breached technical documents reported by BBC Russia even explains that “the Internet of Things is less secure than mobile devices and servers.” The security contractors highlight retained default “factory” passwords as the obvious weakness, one that is easy to exploit… SNIP

New paper: Building science and radiofrequency radiation: What makes smart and healthy buildings

Excerpt: Radiofrequency radiation (RFR), used for wireless communications and “smart” building technologies, including the “Internet of Things,” is increasing rapidly. As both RFR exposures and scientific evidence of harmful effects increase apace, it is timely to heed calls to include low RFR levels as a performance indicator for the health, safety and well-being of occupants and the environment.Adverse biochemical and biological effects at commonly experienced RFR levels indicate that exposure guidelines for the U.S., Canada and other countries are inadequate to protect public health and the environment. Some industry liability insurance providers do not offer coverage against adverse health effects from radiation emitted by wireless technologies, and insurance authorities deem potential liability as “high.” Internationally, governments have enacted laws, and medical and public health authorities have issued recommendations, to reduce and limit exposure to RFR.There is an urgent need to implement strategies for no- or low-RFR emitting technologies, and shielding, in building design and retrofitting. These strategies include installing wired (not wireless) Internet networks, corded rather than cordless phones, and cable or wired connections in building systems (e.g., mechanical, lighting, security). Building science can profit from decades of work to institute performance parameters, operationalizing prudent guidelines and best practices. The goal is to achieve RFR exposures that are ALARA, “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.”…SNIP

Dariusz Leszczynski on a 5G moratorium

Excerpt: From Dariusz LeszczynskiEsteemed anti 5G colleagues would like to have it both ways, but it is wrong. On one hand they claim, correctly, that the 5G was not tested for its health impact on humans. Meaning, there are no studies available to prove it safety. This is correct. But then, they claim that 5G is dangerous and proven to damage human health (Pall, Firstenberg, Davis et al.).Big question is: how do they know it?If, as they correctly claim, research on 5G and health has not been done then there is no evidence to show/prove that 5G is dangerous or that 5G is not dangerous. Also, what 5G frequencies they talk when referring to 5G? Those well below 6 GHz, that were used already and are known to possibly/probably affect health, though the proof of health damage is still elusive? Or are they talking about 26 GHz and 28 GHz and other frequencies over the 30 GHz (mmWaves) that were not studied?…SNIP

Joel M. Moskowitz: Mainstream news media pushes back on 5G-coronavirus speculation: Unintended consequences + more

Excerpt: From Joel M. Moskowitz’s blog: Electromagnetic Radiation Safety Those who promote 5G-coronavirus theories based on weak evidence undermine the credibility of scientists and medical doctors who have expressed concerns about 5G safety based on strong evidence (e.g., the 5G Appeal). Moreover, during this public health crisis, the Telecom industry can exploit these actions to convince mainstream news media to publish industry propaganda that 5G is safe.Following are some recent examples from the US, UK, and Europe of blowback in the mainstream news media regarding 5G-coronavirus theories:…SNIP

Dariusz Leszczynski: Statement of Finland’s Sitra on the 5G deployment

Excerpt: Sitra , the Finnish Innovation Fund, is an independent public foundation which operates directly under the supervision of the Finnish Parliament (Wikipedia link). In response to the request from the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland, Sitra has prepared a short statement concerning auction of the 26 GHz spectrum in Finland. Sitra’s statement was prepared by non-experts in the health and environmental effects of EMF. Thus, there is no information or discussion as to what opinion on the possible radiation effects on human health and environment is more plausible. However, the statement ends with a very clear message:“…If the necessary research data is not available, it must be obtained before making a decision…”Research data on the health and environmental effects of 5G-emitted millimeter-waves (including 26 GHz band) is extremely limited. Scientific information is absolutely insufficient to make educated and science based decisions concerning human health policy and environment protecting policy. The missing scientific data, as Sitra recommends, must be obtained before the decision on the full-blown deployment of the 5G technology is made….SNIP

Video: “The 5G Trojan Horse” Documentary: (96 minutes)

By Derrick Broze, Global Research, February 21, 2020Excerpt:Transcript and SourcesMy name is Derrick Broze. For the past 8 years I have worked as an independent freelance investigative journalist in Houston, Texas. Since 2012 I have covered a wide range of topics, from indigenous resistance at Standing Rock, exposing government and corporate surveillance, and reporting from important trials like Chelsea Manning’s sentencing, and the Silk Road trial. Throughout this time, I have noticed that choosing to investigate certain topics, often results in being labeled a conspiracy theorist, or, at the very least, a proponent of less-than-credible journalism. One of these “forbidden” topics relates to potential harms caused by the use of cell phones and related digital technology.Over the years I have seen articles discussing research on the dangers of radio frequency radiation and electromagnetic fields. Again, I noticed these studies never made mainstream newspapers, or headlines on the 24 hour cable news cycle. Even if the news had reported on this information, would it have made a difference?I – like millions of people around the world – never gave a second thought to the possibility that cell phones or laptops could be causing harm to human health. We assume that the government agencies responsible for these fields have tested everything for safety. I started to wonder Has this blind faith in authority been a huge mistake? …SNIP

With 5G, cities and suburbs will feel the heat

Excerpts: Quoting from the Sydney City Council’s submission to the recent Australian 5G inquiry: “We know, for example that the 5G millimeter wave radio spectrum is adversely affected by trees and other physical assets and this adds a critical reason to collaboratively decide on cell heights and locations,. We will not be willing to sacrifice trees in favour of network performance.” So, in a future 5G city and suburban world which will require thousands of additional with small cell antennas along every street utilising millimeter transmissions, trees may be in the way of achieving those blazing internet speeds. Tree-lined streets, especially on wet days will be an impediment to 5G progress. What will be sacrificed?. . . Even without 5G, trees in the suburbs are having a hard time according to the ABC News: “Tree loss is making for sweaty suburbs, and the households that can least afford it are feeling the heat”.SNIP

Einar Flydal on ICNIRP’s “acceptable science”

    Excerpt:
A few weeks ago, the president of Switzerland and her counsel received a serious letter. The authors were a number of the world’s foremost scientists in the field of radiation protection and health. The researchers warned that Martin Röösli, the man who chairs the BERENIS committee, a committee responsible for providing the Swiss government with advice on radiation protection guidelines, should be scrutinized for impropriety –or to put it more bluntly –for scientific fraud.About time, was my initial reaction. Then, I began to ponder: Is Martin Röösli an outright fraudster? Or are his mis-characterisations of the science the result of the application of unreasonable scientific criteria in his search for truth? It seemed to be an interesting topic worthy of reflection.Either way, the consequences are substantial, not just for Switzerland, but also for the Nordic countries and Japan, as Röösli is a member of radiation protection committees of those countries as well. These committees establish what is to be considered “accepted science” –and thereby also establish the misconceptions on which the radiation protection and health care agencies, as well as politicians, act.

Dariusz Leszczynski on the US FDA report on carcinogenicity of RF

    Excerpt:
In February 2020 US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published Report analyzing studies examining the possible causal link between RF-EMF and cancer. The anti-5G activists in their reading of the FDA Report have narrowly focused on Report’s dismissal of the carcinogenicity evidence/claim by the FDA and they demand withdrawal of the FDA Report as biased and scientifically flawed. This might be a mistake, like ‘throwing out baby with a bath water’, because FDA Report, when read carefully, contradicts some of the opinions of ICNIRP that are the pillars of the ICNIRP’s claim of RF-EMF safety…SNIP

Book Review: The Triumph of Doubt Exposes the Disinformation Playbook in Action

Excerpt: What do tobacco, silica, diesel, teflon, asbestos, lead, PFAS, sugar, talc, alcohol, opiods, climate change, and even football head injuries have in common? Aside from their inherent dangers and significant public health and environmental impacts? Aside from the rigor of the scientific evidence about these impacts? And aside from powerful industries whose profits derive from their use? The answer: They are examples in a well-honed industry public relations playbook based on deception and used to manufacture doubt and uncertainty about the dangers of these products. The playbook’s goal? Confuse the public, stymie any governmental action to protect the public from harm, and protect producer profits for as long as possible…SNIP

The Largest Unethical Medical Experiment in Human History (Monograph)

Excerpt: This monograph describes the largest unethical medical experiment in human history: the implementation and operation of non-ionizing non-visible EMF radiation (hereafter called wireless radiation) infrastructure for communications, surveillance, weaponry, and other applications. It is unethical because it violates the key ethical medical experiment requirement for “informed consent” by the overwhelming majority of the participants. The monograph provides background on unethical medical research/experimentation, and frames the implementation of wireless radiation within that context….SNIP

The Australian 5G inquiry and Whirling Dervishes…

Excerpt: At the International conference, Mobile Communications and Health: Medical, Biological and Social Problems, held in Moscow in 2004, The then ICNIRP chairman Paulo Vecchia stated the following in relation to ICNIRP’s so called precautionary principle approach: “ICNIRP only considers acute effects in its precautionary principle approach. Consideration of long-term effects is not possible. Precautionary actions to address public concerns may increase rather than mitigate worries and fears of the public. This constitutes a health detriment and should be prevented as other adverse effects of EME.”…SNIP

The pitfalls of social media and technology

Social media and the internet has rewired our brains and society in important yet sometimes worrying ways, writes Dali Sulejmani-Blackwell.SOCIAL MEDIA, also known as the “participative internet”, has grown rapidly in the 21st Century, creating a digitally-conscious world. It’s rare to have dinner with a friend or family member where there isn’t a phone on the table next to your food. Is this our fault, or is it a by-product of a digital world that has changed social mores?…SNIP

Dariusz Leszczynski: We, the People… are driving insects to extinction…

Excerpt: The list of environmental pollutants might be, however, soon expanded. The rapid deployment of the 5th generation of the wireless communication technology (5G), will cause that a huge number of the micro-cell-towers will be densely distributed throughout the urban areas. For the the non-urban areas there are plans to deploy satellites, to the low orbit, that would beam the microwaves and provide internet connectivity for any and all locations on earth…Without an urgent governmental intervention, this might be not so distant future…The 5G-involvement has been pointed out in a recent study. It has demonstrated that the radiation levels emitted by the cell towers of the 5G networks will heat bodies of insects to the levels that will be able to affect their normal physiology

ICNIRP’s thermal only guidelines don’t work for insects with 5G-unless you like them fried…

Extracts From the paper: Insects are continually exposed to Radio-Frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields at different frequencies. The range of frequencies used for wireless telecommunication systems will increase in the near future from below 6 GHz (2 G, 3 G, 4 G, and WiFi) to frequencies up to 120 GHz (5 G). This paper is the first to report the absorbed RF electromagnetic power in four different types of insects as a function of frequency from 2 GHz to 120 GHz. SNIP The studied insects that are smaller than 1 cm show a peak in absorption at frequencies (above 6 GHz), which are currently not often used for telecommunication, but are planned to be used in the next generation of wireless telecommunication systems. SNIP… This could lead to changes in insect behaviour, physiology, and morphology over time due to an increase in body temperatures, from dielectric heating.

With 5G are we facing an insect apocalypse?

The other day a message (below) was circulated online by Arthur Firstenberg. As it supposedly happened in Melbourne I decided to do a ‘fact check’ for possible fake news. I managed to contact the person that Arthur mentions (Angela) and yes it certainly appears that this was a real event – with enormous implications. Her neighbours have observed the same thing in their gardens (no insects) and some are also complaining about tinnitus and a sensation of “pressure in the head” since last November. But perhaps it is just not 5G to consider. What about 4G LTE as well? Read on…
